Friday Story Time at Birch Coffee
When I was in college, I spent countless hours studying (ok, pretending to study) in the cafes located on and around the Berkeley campus. I hadn't found an NYC coffee shop that replicated the laid-back Bay Area cafe vibe I recall so fondly from my college days until Sadie and I strolled into Birch Coffee last Friday for their weekly story time. What a find! Located in the very funky-looking Gershwin Hotel just around the corner from Madison Square Park, this cozy little spot is perfect for kids and grownups alike. In addition to a tempting array of sandwiches, salads and baked goods, Birch serves up a host of tasty beverages, including all sorts of coffee drinks and an impressive selection of beer and wine. But the best part of this neighborhood gem is that, each Friday at 10am, the cafe welcomes little ones to its upstairs library for a story time featuring a selection of off-the-beaten-path children's picture books read by one of the owner's friends. On the day we visited, Sadie and her friends Natalie and Shane kicked back in the library's pint-sized chairs to listen to some great stories while they scarfed up bowls of yummy homemade applesauce generously provided by Birch's owners. The kids had a blast, and I am eternally grateful to the owner for lugging our enormous stroller up the flight of steps to the library so that Sadie wouldn't have to be parted from her precious ride (a touchy subject as of late!). Birch's relaxed ambience and friendly staff rendered the cafe's story time a wonderful way to spend the morning, and Sadie and I can't wait to make a return visit! Birch Coffee is located at 5 E. 27th Street, and the free weekly story time takes place each Friday at 10am.
