Last week, I let you know all about the Shine On crafting events taking place at select GapKids stores around the country this month. In case you missed it, here's the scoop. Gap has partnered with craft blogger Merrilee Liddiard of Mer Mag to create a series of in-store art projects inspired by the GapKids and babyGap fall collection, which include styles such as the new 1969 denim pieces Jewel Box Skinnies for girls (the new skinny jean updated in a bright, stretchy denim) and Action Stretch Denim for boys (otherwise known as denim that's made to move). From creating geometric masterpieces on canvas using paint and tape to colorful, custom journals to get kids ready for back-to-school, the Shine On Saturdays projects will keep your kids entertained and inspire them to express their creativity.
My 4-year-old daughter Sadie and I thought the events sounded so fun that we headed out to the Gap on 54th and 5th last Saturday to see what all the fuss was about. Sadie loves making arts & crafts projects, and since I'm not the most creative person, I'm always grateful to have someone else provide Sadie with the inspiration (and materials!) for her next great creation. As soon as we approached the Shine On crafting area in the GapKids section, I knew Sadie was going to love the experience. And love it she did. Last Saturday's project was a Geometric Art creation, which was fantastic both in its simplicity and range of creative possibilities.
Each child was provided with a square canvas, a roll of masking tape and a plate containing the paint colors of the child's choosing, and then let loose to create a geometric design. With some assistance from me, Sadie carefully placed strips of tape to create triangles and squares on her canvas, then diligently painted in the shapes, displaying a remarkable amount of patience for a 4-year-old! When she was finished painting, we lifted the tape off to reveal her finished project, which was similar to a stained-glass window and absolutely beautiful! Sadie was super proud of her creation!

It was a real treat to be able to share the GapKids Shine On experience with my daughter, and I wouldn't have thought of making this type of project together if it weren't for the event. Indeed, Sadie was so inspired and had so much fun, that as soon as we got home she insisted on making yet another geometric shape painting, which kept her occupied and content for quite some time. Thanks GapKids!
