Get it Together with Genius Organizing!

To say that my family's move to the Upper East Side from Murray Hill last summer was chaotic, rushed and fraught with tension would be an understatement of vast proportions.  Indeed, I think it's a safe bet that moving from one home to another is always a stressful endeavor, but throw two small kids and a deadbeat contractor into the mix and you've got yourself a recipe for all kinds of stress.  After coordinating all of the logisitcs of moving (including how we'd be able to manage for several months without a working kitchen due to our contractor's incompetence), the thought of unpacking and getting all of our belongings organized was daunting, to say the least.  So when Nicole Abramovici of Genius Organizing offered to spend several hours of her valuable time with me, I readily and excitedly accepted!

Nicole swooped in and took charge, which was exactly what I needed.  She helped me to unpack everything in my daughter Sadie's room and then set about finding a place for each and every item, including Sadie's vast Disney Princess collection, which really warrants a room of its own.  Nicole then turned to my son Ben's room and similarly got everything out of boxes and into drawers, cabinets and shelves, organizing everything by category and size and imparting plenty of helpful advice along the way.  My favorite of Nicole's tips was what she refers to as the "Genius fold."  It's a specific way of folding shirts and other articles of clothing so that you can see each and every item when you open a drawer.  This may seem simplistic, but it's actually a game changer, as it avoids the annoying problem of having to dig through layers of t-shirts and other items to find the exact article of clothing you want.  I've since mastered this super helpful folding technique and continue to use it for Sadie and Ben's shirts, pajamas and sweaters.  Getting the kids dressed in the morning has been so much easier thanks to Nicole's simple yet effective technique!

Nicole also gave me some great tips on things that I could purchase to help keep all of our stuff organized.  I absolutely love the shelf divider she recommended for our sheets and towels, and her recommendation to purchase as much closed storage as possible for the kids' toys was quite wise, as no one wants or needs to see the massive quantities of toys we have stuffed into the many bins and baskets strategically placed in the kids' rooms.  Most importantly, Nicole was an absolute delight and never passed judgment on all of the "stuff" we'd accumulated, most of which admittedly shouldn't have made the move. Her empathy likely stems from the fact that Nicole is a self-confessed reformed "clutterer," so she totally understands the attachment we make to our belongings.

I only wish I'd had more time with Nicole, as the sheer volume of everything was really too much for just one day.  I highly recommend getting in touch with her to assist you with any organizing needs you may have, no matter how small or large they may be.  Indeed, I'm incredibly tempted to book a few additional hours of her time to help me organize our closets and kitchen cabinets, which I definitely feel are not being put to their best and most efficient use.  Oh, who am I kidding?  I really need Nicole to come back and just Genius-ify my entire apartment!  For more information on Nicole and her fabulous organizing services, visit
