Sentence Structure
Like building a house, before a student can learn how to write an effective paragraph, they need to learn how to construct a well-written sentence. With the Writing Mastery software program, students first learn how to write a simple sentence made of a subject and predicate. They then learn how to expand their sentences with adjectives and adverbs; how to write four types of paragraphs, including declarative, imperative, exclamatory and interrogative; and how to write well-constructed compound and complex sentences. Learning these foundational skills and receiving lots of practice writing sentences, helps prepare them for the next step: writing simple paragraphs.
Simple Paragraphs
Once students learn how to write well-written sentences and how to effectively expand their sentences, they are ready to move on to learning how to write a simple paragraph. A simple paragraph is made of five sentences: a topic sentence, three detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence. With Writing Mastery, students are given several examples of well-written simple paragraphs before writing them on their own, and they enjoy highlighting the different sentences using multi-colored digital highlighters. Students then learn how to brainstorm, write, and self-check four different types of paragraphs: example, process, reason, and compare/contrast. An example paragraph gives examples, like summer activities or meals you can eat for breakfast. A process paragraph describes steps in a process, like how to bake a cake or how to make a bed. A reason paragraph gives reasons to support a topic, like why summer should be longer or why apples are the best type of fruit. Finally, a compare/contrast paragraph compares and contrasts two items, like cupcakes verses pie or summer verses winter. It is important that students receive a great deal of practice and repetition brainstorming, writing, and self-checking these various types of paragraphs before moving on.
Extended Paragraphs
An extended paragraph expands a simple paragraph by adding three supporting detail sentences after each detail sentence. For example, a simple paragraph might read as follows:
There are many different types of ice cream. First, there is vanilla. Next, there is chocolate. Finally, there is cookies and cream. I like chocolate ice cream the best!
To turn this simple paragraph into an extended paragraph, we would add three supporting detail sentences after each detail sentence, like the following example:
There are many different types of ice cream. First, there is vanilla. Vanilla is a very popular flavor. You can find it in almost every ice cream store. Many people love the simple, classic taste. Next, there is chocolate. Chocolate ice cream is also very popular. Some people add chocolate sprinkles on top of their chocolate ice cream. Others like to eat it plain. Finally, there is cookies and cream. Cookies and cream adds crunch and more flavor to plain vanilla ice cream. Many kids like this flavor. It can be found at ice cream stores or in supermarket freezers. I like chocolate ice cream the best!
When learning how to write an extended paragraph using the Writing Mastery software program, students are given ample practice writing the four paragraph types they learned with simple paragraphs: example, process, reason, and compare/contrast. Five Paragraph Essays
Many students struggle to learn how to write an effective five paragraph essay. With Writing Mastery, they learn how to write a well-constructed introduction paragraph, consisting of an opening, lead-in, and thesis statement. They then move onto learning how to write three subsequent body paragraphs as well as a conclusion paragraph. Students also learn how to begin their writing using various options, such as a question, quote, general statement, opposite statement, or story, and are given ample practice brainstorming, writing, and self-checking various types of essays.
