Description

It’s time to celebrate Easter with Scandinavia House! On Saturday, April 9 at 11 AM, join us with Finnish singer-songwriter Ida Metsberg for an Easter-themed concert and art activity exploring the unique traditions and children’s crafts from the Nordic region.

Easter in the Nordic countries is all about welcoming the long-awaited spring after the dark and cold winter months and is celebrated with a variety of fun family-friendly activities and traditions. In today’s celebration, we will learn about the tradition of the Easter witch  — the Swedish ‘påskkärring’ or Finnish ‘Trulli’ — who, according to folklore, would fly on a broom to the mythical island of Blåkulla on Good Friday to visit with the devil, returning on Easter Day. In Sweden and Finland, children dress up and go door-to-door in groups to wish residents ‘Glad påsk’ (Happy Easter), and receive sweets in exchange for a home-made drawing or Easter letter!

Today we will dress up as ‘påskkärring’ (with painted cheeks and freckles) and make our own drawings to exchange for a special Swedish treat. We will also create ‘påskris’ birch twig bouquet arrangements adorned with feathers and yarn. All activities will be accompanied by the singing talents of Ida Metsberg!

Materials needed include an old scarf, apron, or dress and an old coffee pot or basket for the Easter witch dress-up!

This program will take place at Scandinavia House in Volvo Hall; registration is limited. Please purchase tickets in advance at the link above.

We always recommend confirming details before attending.
